Planet Earth was made to nurture and sustain our life! The creator has endowed her with the Sun, air, water and land for people like us and also the fish, plants, animals to live their full and a rich life. She provides us with the warmth, water, air, and food. With the resources she has at her command, planet Earth provides us the environment for our well being, and growth and reproduction for all the varied forms of life.
First of all she keeps the planet warm by maintaining a livable temperature. She moderates Solar heating during the day and cooling during the night by using air currents, clouds in the sky and tides of the sea. She makes the rain fall to cool the hot spots. Her rotation creates reducing surface speeds from the equator to the poles causing air to swirl around in circles on the surface of the globe. She keeps the composition of air and water fairly uniform by ceaseless air movement and intercontinental streams in the oceans. Without her efforts on keeping the planet warm we would freeze to death.
Secondly, she provides drinking water to animals and irrigation water to the forests and farms on land. Planet Earth carries a huge stock of water in its oceans. But it is salty and not useful for animals and plants. They need sweet water from rain. She causes the surface water from the oceans to evaporate from the heat of the Sun and as the water vapor rises in the atmosphere, she condenses it to form clouds. She then moves the clouds with air currents on to the continents. When the clouds are on land, they meet the chilling air coming from the snow-clad mountains. This causes the water drops to become heavier and fall to the ground as rain or snow. In this way the planet Earth succeeds in bringing water for drinking for animals and people and for the growth of plants. Without her bringing the water to the land through rain we would all die of thirst.
Thirdly, she provides fresh air for us to breathe. All living creatures and plants breathe in oxygen from the air and breathe out carbon dioxide during their respiration. Planet Earth reconverts the carbon dioxide back to oxygen for us to breathe by photosynthesis in the leaves with the help of sunlight. Thus Planet Earth constantly replenishes the oxygen in the air keeping it fresh. Without her replenishing the oxygen we would die from suffocation.
Fourthly, she creates food for us to eat to get our energy for working. She creates starchy food using photosynthesis on the leaves of plants in the fields. She uses the carbon dioxide from the air breathed out by the animals and combines it with water from rain and nitrogen from the soil with sunlight to make the food for us to eat. She has bacteria in the soil to absorb nitrogen from the air to replenish the stock of nitrogen in the soil. Without her ability to make food we would all die from hunger.
Fifthly, she gives us vision to see by reflecting sunlight from the things around us. Sunlight consists of continuous stream of zillions of photons coming to Earth during day. Photons are particles of light energy showering on the planet Earth every second, day after day. She reflects the photons falling on the surface of objects scattering them all round. Some of these photons impinge on the retinas of our eyes giving us the vision to see the object and to see the World. The photons are invisible, doing their work silently and selflessly to enable us to see the blue sky and beautiful World that planet Earth has made for us. Without her reflecting and scattering the photons we would be blind.
Sixthly, she enables us to hear by making the air carry sound waves. These waves travel through air to reach our eardrums for us to hear the birds chirp and to listen to music. Without the movement of sound waves in air we would be deaf.
Seventhly, she enables us to smell scents by transporting molecules of aroma through the air to our nostrils. The delicate perfume of the flowers tingle our noses! She even uses the smell of pheromone scents to attract the mates for reproduction. This is essential for many species of small insects to find their opposite sex from miles away for continuation of their species! Without her blowing pheromone smells afar, many species would be extinct!
When we think of all that the planet Earth gives us and what could be life without it, we are astounded and left speechless! It is true that Planet Earth sustains our lives by giving us the warmth we need, oxygen we breathe, water we drink, and food we eat. But it's not the whole truth. She does much more for us. She enriches our lives by empowering us to use our five senses. Our senses are of no use in outer space. We owe her our ability to see, hear, taste, smell, and touch. She gives us everything. We are nothing without her. . . . . I can only say in gratitude:
Thank you Earth for the air we breathe,
Thank you Earth for the water we drink,
Thank you Earth for the food we eat,
Thank you Earth for the light we see,
Thank you Earth for the music we hear,
Thank you Earth for the flowers we smell,
Thank you Earth for the salt we taste,
Thank you Earth for the fruits we touch,
It's for our children we know,
We love you Earth for everything.
